My Top 3 Posing Tips

Updated: Oct 31, 2020

It’s no secret that a photo session can be daunting. Unless you are used to being in front of a camera it can feel awkward and uncomfortable. It’s just hard to know what you’re supposed to do... Infact, I think one of the questions I hear the most is what do I do with my hands???

It’s ok if you feel a little awkward or nervous for your photo session. That’s completely normal and understandable. I even feel awkward when it’s my turn to be in front of the camera.

So here are a few easy tips to help you loosen up, and to make the most out of your engagement session.

Keep It Natural

It’s easy to tense up soon as the lens cap comes off. After all you want the very best photos of yourself right? Sadly the exact opposite happens when we tense up...

My style of posing is very natural. I don’t focus on creating the best photograph with everyone in a line smiling ever so perfectly. I focus on capturing the best moment. To me that’s what makes a truly great photograph.

The key here is to keep things natural. Just have fun. Tell a funny joke, laugh, hug, kiss. Whatever it is that entertains you and brings you joy that’s what we want to capture.

The best photographs aren’t planned. They are not thought out. The best photographs are moments, and moments just happen.

Just Be You

Another temptation when going into a photo session is to try to be someone you’re not. It’s easy to want to be different; to want to be someone else. We as a culture are just to hard on ourselves. We spend our life comparing ourselves to others; drawing imaginary lines that chart our perceived achievements. Now is your chance to break that. It’s time to be yourself; to embrace who you really are.

Whether you believe this or not, I believe that there is a God who created you. He created you just the way you are. He created every single quirk and imperfection. Not only that, but your spouse is marrying you for you not for someone you pretend to be while on camera.

Just Be You!

Do Something

One of the easiest ways to fight the awkwardness of having a camera pointed at you is to just do something. This is where I come in. During your engagement session I’ll most lead you through various activities. I’ll have you walk together, hug, maybe even a quick spin and dip if you guys are up for it. These activities will cause you to laugh, have fun, and most importantly create memories.

Another way to capture some amazing moments is to do what I call a styled shoot. This is were we pick a theme/activity and run with it. Here are a few ideas for you.

  • Coffee at Home

  • Picnic at The Park

  • Doggy Date

  • Boat Ride

  • Couples Painting

Really it can be anything you want. It’s just something that interests you. If you love surfing we can do a surfing session. If you like to bake we can bake some brownies. If you are both gamers we can totally do a gaming date night session. Whatever it is it just needs to be personal and fun. That’s what creates moments.

I really hope these three tips help you during our photo session. I want them to not only create great pictures but to give you some amazing memories in the process. No photo session has to be awkward or scary. If you approach it with an attitude of excitement and fun you’ll capture some beautiful memories.
